Deep Tissue Massage

60 minutes

Deep tissue massage is a technique aimed at reaching the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue to relieve chronic pain, tension, and tightness. It focuses on breaking down adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) and improving mobility and posture.

Procedure

  1. Consultation:
    • Discuss your health history, specific areas of pain or tension, and goals for the massage with the therapist.
  2. Preparation:
    • Disrobe to your comfort level and lie on the massage table, typically covered with a sheet or towel.
  3. Warm-up:
    • The therapist may start with lighter pressure to warm up the muscles and prepare them for deeper work.
  4. Application of Deep Pressure:
    • Using fingers, thumbs, knuckles, elbows, and forearms, the therapist applies deep pressure to targeted areas. This pressure is slower and more deliberate compared to other massage techniques.
  5. Focus on Problem Areas:
    • The therapist concentrates on areas of chronic tension and pain, using techniques such as stripping (deep, gliding pressure along the length of the muscle fibers) and friction (pressure applied across the grain of the muscle).
  6. Communication:
    • Throughout the massage, the therapist checks in with you to ensure the pressure is comfortable and effective. You should communicate any discomfort or pain.
  7. Gradual Release:
    • The therapist may use myofascial release techniques, where sustained pressure is applied to the fascia (connective tissue) to release tension and improve movement.
  8. Cool-down:
    • The session may end with lighter strokes to soothe the muscles and promote relaxation.
  9. Post-Massage Advice:
    • After the massage, the therapist may provide tips for self-care, such as hydration, gentle stretching, and rest. Some soreness is normal after a deep tissue massage, so applying ice or heat to the affected areas can help reduce discomfort.
